A very important specialty in growth.

That is how we can define neuro oncology. In the past decades, we had numerous developments in neuro oncological imaging with the diagnosing techniques enhancement, like PET and magnetic resonance, technology for a more efficient and secure surgery with microsurgery, neuro navigation, intra-operative monitoring, surgery with the patient awake, intra operative resonance and greater understanding of the disease with the advances in genetics and molecular research, that now have a fundamental prognosis role and of therapeutical decision.

However, few professionals from this area didicate themselves exclusively to the area of neuro oncology. Moreover, in the Latin American reality, very few neurologists and oncologists dedicate themselves to the study of these pathologies of the central nervous system, whether in the research area or in the treatment. This scenery has to change and SNOLA (Society for Neuro Oncology Latin America) is the first and biggest step for this achievement.

In the last decade, after fellowship in neuro oncological surgery, when back to São Paulo we noticed how difficult it was to work in an integrated manner with all the specialties mentioned, whether due to structural hospital matters or due to not knowing the professionals of the area. With great luck we have gathered a group a group in the Sírio Libanês Hospital, coordinated by the doctors Antonio Buzzaid, Fernando Maluf and Artur Katz, with integral participation of the crews in radiotherapy, pathology, neuro imaging and neuro surgery, where a tumor broad dedicated to neuro oncology was done.

Without a doubt, all the cases were discussed in an integrated manner within all specialties and the best decision regarding our patients was made, always with an enriching exchange of knowledge. With this, the idea of hosting an International Congress for Neuro Oncology began, which for our delight was a success. In 2014 we had its third edition with 515 participants. Proudly, we had three editions of the Current Trends of Gliomas (sponsored by MSD) where we had the pleasure to be part of the chair of such event with our oncologist friends from Brazil and Argentina, as well as great repercussion and an enriching exchange of experiences.

Nowadays, many other tumor boards happen weekly in São Paulo, and in many other specialized centers, diverse specific courses in neuro oncology are performed periodically, as well as masters in this area and new technologies and treatments arise with promising perspectives.

We needed something bigger and compromised to represent all the specialties mentioned.

After long and positive talks with our friends from SNO, with special attention to Mr. Chas Haynes and in view of this entire context exemplified above, honorably during the last SNO Congress 2013 in San Francisco SNOLA was created.

We commit to the educational, academic and the integration of all specialties involved in neuro oncology for the development of this medical specialty in our continent. We are conscious of the challenges that will arise, the political storms and assistance regarding the Latin American reality, but we have faith and pride to develop this important project, engaged earnestly and seriously.

This fight isn’t of few, but of all who provide care for patients with CNS tumors, that like neuro oncology and that also want to move further. We count on the support from SNO, EANO, ASNO, and as part of the World Federation of Neuro Oncology Societies, SNOLA emerges strong and optimistic.

Let’s hold our hands, learning, discussing and growing together!!!
